Anonymised transcript of an interview with a young woman (Tina) in her early twenties who works at a school in South Manchester.
She describes her ‘strict upbringing’ and the arguments with her parents when she lived at home about their different views about religion and marriage. Describes her experiences of sex education in biology and ‘life skills’ lessons at school ‘mainly on contraceptives, and pregnancy and unmarried mothers’. Moved from Bolton to Manchester as a teenager to live in a red light district where she was sometimes mistaken for a prostitute.

Describes her first sexual experience - a one night stand in Blackpool - as ‘boring’ and refers to two subsequent sexual relationships. Gives an account of a recent sexual experience with three strangers. Describes feeling ‘in control’ and lying to the men about having had an AIDS test. Discusses the difficulties of talking about safe sex. She always used the pill and never used condoms. Doesn’t feel at risk from AIDS from sex but is concerned about the risk of coming into contacts with body fluids through her work in a school.
